Were Blacks that immigrated to South Africa during Apartheid given special treatment?

I heard that is you were a Black person who was an illegal immigrant from another AFRICAN COUNTRY (Zimbabwe, Mozambique, etc) than you were given "honorary white status" and did not have to follow the rules of Apartheid and were treated better than the black people native to South Africa. Is it true that blacks from other nations were given "honorary white status"?
