Can't concieve and doc prescribed clomid?

My boyfriend and I decided to start TTC #2 when my son was almost 1yr old. So we have been TTC now for almost 5 months and still nothing. we didnt even try with my son so I dont know whats going on. I went to my doc because I have not had my period since May and obviously not pregnant, he decided to put me on clomid. Does anyone know what exactly that is and what its supposed to do. I havent started taking it yet. Also any tips on how to concieving would help and be much appriciated. We are both young, 20 and 23 so I know there is time but I want my children to be close in age, like 2 yrs would be great. I dont know much about the "ttc lingo" that you guys use so please dont confuse me. LOL.
